Tanzania is upgrading its ocean ports, shipping technology, and sea trade rules to attract foreign business. At the Fifth International Blue Economy Conference in Dar es Salaam, government officials confirmed new updates to ocean and business laws to support foreign companies investing in shipping, ocean logistics, and coastal project developments.

How to Register a Company in Tanzania

Foreign investors entering Tanzania’s shipping, port services, or ocean trade industries must register a local company through the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA). Investors usually set up a private limited company as a subsidiary or register a foreign branch.

For large projects like port management or shipping fleets, investors often set up a special project company. Using a holding company based in a low-tax or treaty-friendly region helps protect company ownership and simplifies moving money in and out of the business.

Licensing and Business Requirements

To get government tax discounts and business permits, foreign companies must apply through the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) or the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA).

Companies must have a real local office, hire local directors, and keep official company records in the country to maintain their business licenses and protect their investment.

Key Differences in Setup Options

Setting up a business through the Tanzania Investment Centre gives companies tax discounts and faster permit approvals. In contrast, setting up a standard local business without investment center approval requires paying regular corporate tax rates and following normal local permit steps.

Guiding Global Expansion

As East Africa expands its ocean trade routes and port facilities, setting up a correct, viable business structure ensures safety and protection for your money.
